Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidenced-based, organized system of positive behavior management across all school settings (classroom, hallways, restrooms, locker rooms, cafeteria, etc). Clear school wide expectations and consequences are established. Through PBIS there is a system for all students to be recognized for meeting behavioral expectations. Additionally, an essential characteristic is the explicit teaching of positive behavior expectations. Implementation of PBIS is typically a 3-5 year process that involves continuous evaluations of the efficacy of the system in a given school.
It uses a prevention framework for establishing and sustaining effective school-wide and individual behavior supports needed to enhance academic, social, and behavioral outcomes for all students. Research shows reduced major disciplinary infractions, improvement in student pro-social behavior, concentration, emotion regulation, academic achievement, and school climate. For additional information and research regarding PBIS, please visit www.pbis.org.
At AMSB, PBIS was implemented for the first time school wide in the 2016-17 school year. At AMSB, our expectations for students are to “Be AMITY!” This means to be: Accountable, Motivated, Independent, Trustworthy, and Your Best Self. The expectation matrix and an example of an expectation poster are provided below. Be AMITY also refers to the traits which are displayed in practices associated with having good character and exemplary citizenship. To promote a better understanding of citizenship, students are be provided with a Be AMITY Citizenship Rubric on which they reflect and score themselves each marking period. Teachers use the same rubric to score citizenship on report cards.
The Be AMITY expectations are taught to students and modeled by staff. Students are frequently reinforced for demonstrated expected behavior with positive feedback and Be AMITY! tickets. Tickets can be used to "purchase" items at a school store in the library and smaller school store carts on teams. Items available at the school stores range from unique school supplies, stress balls, Amity bracelets and others. Student recommendations and donations are used in determining which items to offer in school stores. Also, tickets can be entered into drawings at the school wide level for gift cards to various places such as Starbucks, Xbox, Amazon, iTunes and others. School wide raffles occur monthly during Be AMITY pep rallies. Moreover, each quarter individual students are recognized for exemplifying one of the Be AMITY traits. Students receive an award, their picture in the main lobby, an item from the school store, and additional Be AMITY tickets.
