GENERAL CLASS DESCRIPTION
College Writing is a College Credit Now class, in partnership with Chemeketa Community College. For the cost of $30 (for all college classes taken in a year), a student can earn significant college credit while in high school. The focus of the class is credit for WR 121, which the preliminary class required for all college freshmen. It should be noted, however, that taking the class for credit is not required; a student can just take it to improve skills through rigor. By taking College Writing in high school, students can earn 4 required college credits for a nominal fee. College Writing is also a weighted class on their high school transcript.
The schedule for the year
The first step in College Writing is to register with Chemeketa and receive a K#, which is their Chemeketa ID. Then they need to go through the placement assessment process to see what class they are most prepared to take. Students do not need to go through the placement process to take College Writing at Amity High School, but they do have to do it to get college credit. We will start the year with a college preparatory curriculum. This loosely follows the WR115 content, with a few English III elements thrown in. This ensures that students are prepared for the rigor of WR 121, while also getting all of the competencies that come with Junior English (mostly public speaking).
Once we have a better idea of class eligibility, we'll schedule class registration. Students who are placed into WR 121 will register for class in March, and grades will be submitted in June. Transcripts for those classes are usually available 2 weeks following grade submission. It is the responsibility of the student to express the desire for credit and to register with Chemeketa for the class. I will be able to provide the registration instructions and information, but I cannot do the registration process for them.
