Amherst County is located in Central Virginia, 15 miles north of the City of Lynchburg and 50 miles south of the City of Charlottesville along the US 29 corridor. The county is bordered by the Tye & Piney Rivers to the north, the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west, and the James River to the south and east. Amherst County covers 479 square miles, with 10 square miles being water, and is home to approximately 32,000 residents.
Amherst County has four public lakes for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking: Mill Creek, Thrashers Lake, Otter Lake, and Stonehouse Lake.
The county has many trails, including about 25 miles of the Appalachian Trail, which runs through the George Washington National Forest.
The Blue Ridge Mountains form the western boundary of the county.
The James River borders the county on the south and east, and the Piney River makes up much of the northern boundary.
