Section 1: Inquiry Question and Concept Exploration
Explanation of the guiding question or concept
How can movement, intuition, and destruction be used as tools to uncover meaning and shape a more resolved abstract artwork?
According to the inquiry statement that was given, it's trying to say how different techniques, placement of objects, or just traces in general affect or create a deeper meaning in your artwork. I kind of understood this from the start, since changing small details in any artwork makes a lot of movement. In this unit, we went through expressing emotions and discomfort through the canvas, trying new things, and "ruining" parts we liked, avoiding getting attached. (76 words)
Section 2: Connections
Cultural, historical, and artistic influences with critical evaluation.
Since last year, I knew who Yayoi Kusama was because of a project I did before, and I really liked the patterns she did. Then I did some research on more artists with similar bright color preferences to inspire my painting. I really liked these artist, specifically since after doing some research on their artworks, especially Jadé Fadojutimi, because the painting I put there looks like crystals for some reason. At first, I just did random lines, but then, after getting inspired, I started to use the researched pieces as inspiration. As you can see, my artwork ended up being colorful just like my inspirations, using more abstract elements other than solid, the eyes being the only solid element. I wanted to draw like the entry of my mind when I am thinking about nothing. (137 words)
Section 3: Investigate
Visual evidence of material tests, alternate compositions, sketches.
To achieve the completion of this piece, I experimented with the layering of different materials like paint, chalk, pencils, etc, to try to create lines, patterns, and textures to make my piece more interesting. At the beginning, I started doing many big shapes, and that made the painting feel bland but colorful. That's where I decided to the further end of finishing the painting, to add smaller details to emphasize the different bland areas. I also learned how important it is to generate compositions, not only with the shapes, but also with the colors, otherwise the painting will look weird and not balanced at all. (105 words)
Section 4: Create
Visual documentation of steps of creation
Day 2
Day 3
Day 4
Day 5
Day 6
Day 7
At the beginning, I came with no idea how to start or create a good composition, so I just listened to the teacher's directions, and then I would have a base. Slowly, I started to get more inspired to do more vibrant colors, because they fit my style better. thats when the ideas of artists like Yayoi Kusama came to my mind, because she uses bright colors, just like I wanted to. This made me do some research to find artists with the same mindset I had at the moment. As the days went by, I figured I had a good color scheme, but I didn't have many small details, so I decided on day 5 to start adding them. At day 6, I loved the different shapes and patterns I ended up having, but I didn't like the bright green lines, so on day seven, I changed it and ended up loving the composition on day 7. I love how colorful and full of life it is. (168 words)
Section 5: Final Arwork
Artist: Sasha Gitter
Title: "Nothing"
Size: 30cm x 50cm
Date of Completion: 16 September 2025
The Why: What I describe as thinking about "nothing", random thoughts in general.
Section 6: Communicate and Reflect
Challenges, successes, and self-evaluation of how the artwork aligns with the inquiry question.
This project was not a new experience, because when I was little, I used to scribble when I was mad, creating "abstract art"; this changed the dynamics a little, having me think about where to place different components for the composition to look good. My goal in this project was to make something not completely solid, more like "scribbles" and different shapes and bright colors for that "dream" look. I didn't like this challenge that much because we had to constantly follow directions when abstract art is supposed to be "free thinking" and follow what you think goes best. I still enjoyed experimenting with this new type of art again and reuniting with it.
Something I didn't struggle with was the usage of colors and not being afraid to ruin my artwork; something that was pretty challenging was time management. I had a lot of trouble finishing this because of the final small details. I ended up finishing and liking the project, but I'm definitely going to try new strategies to have more control over timelines.
In general, I like to draw eyes; even though many people decided to use this element, I know I did it differently. I wanted to recreate eyes under "hypnosis", since I wanted to create an illusion effect in each of them. Also, during this project, I figured out how much I like to implement polka dots; it was really fun and colorful. All of this relates to me because I like fun paintings with a lot of colors, especially bright ones. Overall, this project was fun, but I definitely wouldn't repeat it if we had to follow some kind of instructions. But otherwise I would. (281 words)
