Indian Child Welfare Act
The Indian Child Welfare Act was enacted in 1978 in response to the largely disproportionate number of American Indian and Alaska Native children who were removed from their homes and placed in boarding schools or non-Indian foster homes. Congressional findings from the mid-1970s showed that between 25%-35% of all AI/AN children had been removed from their homes by state welfare agencies.
