1st Quarter-
We will be working on lab safety and the scientific method in 6th grade science at the start of the year. Students will create a disaster lab as well as complete various experiments and create their own experiment from scratch! Students will be starting their second unit about Matter, Energy and Motion towards the end of September. They will be creating their own element presentations during this unit.
Throughout the year, we will also be learning about cutting edge science news through the use of Science World magazine. The Science World magazine is non-fiction reading incorporating the common core standards. Magazine includes digital issues with interactive videos, games and extra practice. A new issue will be delivered and used once a month in the science curriculum.
2nd Quarter-
We will be finishing the Matter, Energy, and Motion unit discussing and learning about the periodic table, particle motion, energy transformations and speed. Once the Matter, Energy, and Motion unit is finished and assessed, we will be starting the longest unit of the year; Cellular to Multicelluar organisms. We will be starting this unit off by studying of the basics of Modern Cell Theory and that all organisms are composed of cells, which are the fundamental unit of life.
3rd Quarter-
We will continue studying cells and their organelles. We will focus on how cells carry on the many processes that sustain life. We will study the organization of living things, kingdoms, and the main body systems.
4th Quarter-
We will begin the last nine weeks by studying the Earth Systems and how they are dependent upon each other. We will then focus on minerals and their specific properties, rocks and the rock cycle, and different soil and their composition.
