Unit 4: Earth & the Solar System
Curriculum Overview
Learning Goals
By the end of the unit, students will be able to:
Recalling accurate science
Explain the characteristics of major types of objects that orbit the sun (e.g., planets, comets, meteoroids, asteroids).
Describe the effects of meteoroids as it enters the Earth’s atmosphere and lands on the Earth's surface.
Identify tools and technology used to explore the solar system (e.g. ISS, probes, rovers, telescopes).
Explain how gravitational forces affect the orbit of the planets around the sun and the moon(s) around the planets.
Interpreting and communicating science concepts
Compare and contrast the characteristics of the eight planets as it relates to its position from the Sun, size, composition, and movement.
Make a table, chart or graphic that interprets the general characteristics of the major planets in the solar system. Use real data (current).
Compare and contrast the physical characteristics of meteors, meteoroids, and meteorites, asteroids, and comets.
Explore current scientific discussions about how to classify planets (e.g., dwarf vs. regular).
Demonstrating science knowledge
Design and construct a relative scaled-model that can demonstrate the planet size in relationship to the Sun and the Earth.
Research recent discoveries and missions (e.g. missions to Mars) and explain how discoveries have expanded our knowledge of the universe.
Designing technological/ engineering solutions using science concepts
Analyze various online models or student created models of the solar system. Critique the models on their ability to accurately depict the relationships among bodies in the solar system.
Choose a planet (other than Earth) or a moon and research and develop a plan to colonize it with humans.
Evaluate current conditions and what would be needed to meet the basic requirements for humans to live there. Critique the plan. Ask: Is the plan feasible? What equipment is required? Make a final recommendation based on the research. Present recommendations to the class.
