Unit 2: Stars and Galaxies
Curriculum Overview
Learning Goals
By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
Recalling accurate science
Identify the sun as a medium-sized star and the only star in the solar system.
Recall that there are many other stars in the universe and they are different sizes, but the sun appears larger because it is closer to Earth.
Identify tools and technology used to explore space (e.g. ISS, probes, rovers, telescopes).
Interpreting and communicating science concepts
Differentiate between the sun and a red dwarf or blue giant star. (e.g. Make a table or chart to represent the comparison.)
Compare and contrast the general characteristics of the sun and other stars (distance, size and composition).
Demonstrating science knowledge
Design and construct a model that shows the relationship between the size of the sun and Earth.
Research ways that constellations have been used for navigation throughout history and explain how they appear to change throughout the year.
Research current and new discoveries about the stars and sun and explain how discoveries have expanded our knowledge of the universe.
