NWF (Nonsense Word Fluency): For this assessment, your child will be given a piece of paper with nonsense words on it. Your child needs to read as many of these words as possible in one minute. If he/she isn’t able to read the whole word, he/she should say all the sounds in that word (sound it out). Some examples of a nonsense word are: vip, ig, & zol. Reading nonsense words helps your child be able to read bigger words since there are nonsense words in many words that we read. An example is the word “yesterday”. Your child may be able to read the words “yes” and “day”, but if he/she can figure out the word “ter”, he/she can put it all together and read the word “yesterday”. Practice having your child sound out words he/she comes to in books that isn’t already known. When possible, your child should put as many sounds together as possible to read it as a whole word read.
Blending Cards for CVC words. Say each sound and then put the sounds together to read them as a word.
Try to read these CVC & CCVC words as a whole word. Put the sounds together and read it all together as a word.
