The "snake" sound or the "flat tire" sound
The /s/ sound can be mispronounced in many different ways. Here are some common /s/ sound errors:
Interdental lisp: When making an /s/ sound, the tongue may poke through the teeth instead of staying behind them. This can result in a /th/ sound, called an interdental lisp. Learn more here.
Lateral lisp: Air may escape through the sides of the tongue, creating a "slushy" sound. This is called a lateral lisp. Learn more here.
Stopping: A sound that should be sustained, like /s/, may be shortened, resulting in a "t" or "d" sound. For example, a child might say "tun" instead of "sun". Learn more here.
Cluster reduction: When the /s/ is part of a consonant cluster, it may be omitted entirely. For example, a child might say "poon" instead of "spoon". Learn more here.
