What We Will Learn
Vision for Learning
Here is Alpine School District's Vision for Learning. The goal is to ensure that all students learn the necessary knowledge, skills, and dispositions to be successful.
Throughout all our learning, we will refer to the 6 Cs:
-Collaboration -Communication
-Creativity -Critical Thinking
-Citizenship -Character
Language Arts
All instruction will be based on the Core Standards set by the Utah State Board of Education.
The 95% Phonics Core Program and Reading Wonders program from McGraw-Hill will be key features of our reading instruction.
Phonics
Knowing which sounds match up to which letters is vital to reading and writing. We will build on and solidify the phonics instruction they gained in Kindergarten and 1st grade.
Research shows that there are more effective ways of learning phonics and spelling than memorizing a list of spelling words each week. Instead, we will be focusing on a different phonics skill each week. The students will have opportunities to work on that skill in various contexts throughout the week.
Fluency
We will work on reading faster, while still maintaining accuracy, expression, and comprehension.
Comprehension
Reading is pointless if you can't understand what you are reading. Here are some of the comprehension skills and strategies we will practice this year:
identify key details
ask & answer questions
reread
compare & contrast
make predictions
main idea
problem & solution
cause & effect
author's purpose
Writing
Here are some writing units we will do this year:
Maintaining good letter formation
Really understanding what a sentence is
Silly stories with a beginning, middle, and end
Personal narratives
Writing friendly letters
Learning how to write paragraphs
Persuasive opinion writing
Researching and writing nonfiction reports
Vocabulary
In addition to organically learning new words as we read and learn, we will have 8 vocabulary words a week as part of our Wonders program.
We will explore how various affixes (pre-, dis-, un-, -ly, -ful) affect what words mean. We will discuss idioms, similes, and how to find the meaning of new words.
