Cutting Activities
Cutting Introduction
Watch the video to know how to set your student up for cutting with scissors!
Pre-Cutting Skills
Use tongs or handy scoopers to help your child learn how to open, aim, and close scissors!
Alligator Cutting
Pretend your blunt-nosed scissors are alligators. Use your scissors like a puppet and have your "alligator" talk to you child. Use a funny voice. Have your alligator tell your child that they are SOOOOOO hungry and ask your child if they can feed them some yummy fish. Use the attached sheets to feed your child fish. Often, children don't cut all of the way to the corners, so I have added a puffer fish at each corner to encourage the alligator to bite their favorite tasty fish that POPs when they bite it. Begin with snipping and progress toward complex shapes as your child masters the preceding skill. Encourage your child to cut right in the middle of the black lines (not on the border between the black line and white space).
The Snipping Song
We use Mr. Alligator to teach us how to hold scissors, how to hold the paper, how to aim for a cutting target, and make individual snips.
The Line Cutting Song
Learn to make progressive snips on a straight line as we help Mr. Alligator eat some yummy fishies!
