We use technology to enhance our lessons and provide opportunities to students that they may not otherwise have. Our goal is to use technology deliberately, with a student objective in mind. We should steer clear of screen time without direction and should strive to engage students in creation, thought, and expression. The TIMS Matrix, developed by the Florida Center for Instructional Technology is a framework for measuring meaningful use of technology to enhance learning. The second link will take you to a series of videos of K-2 classrooms using technology in various levels of the framework. This is an opportunity to see what technology integration looks like in the early grades.
Professor Liz Kolb from the University of Michigan, School of Education designed this framework in 2011 to guide teachers wishing to bridge educational technologies and teaching practices in the classroom. Her decades of research has concluded that it is good instructional strategies that make for effective technology integration. This framework helps teachers evaluate and choose technology that is appropriate for their students' learning goals.
The International Society for Technology in Education is a global network of educators who believe that technology can be transformative to education. They have developed evidence-based professional development, guidance, journals, and standards for teachers and students using technology in education. MACUL is the Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning. It is an organization dedicated to teaching educators about best practices in educational technology and providing support for the challenges that technology can bring. They put on a conference in Michigan each year, connect you with communities of fellow educators with whom you can share ideas, offer grants, and feature articles by fellow teachers. Join for free!
