Location: Malitbog is a municipality in the province of Southern Leyte. The town is surrounded by Sogod Bay in the East. It takes around 3 to 4 hours to reach Malitbog from Tacloban City by a local van, and more than 1 hour from Maasin City in a multicab.
Cost: Free! We provide three meals a day on each working day and accommodation for the duration of your stay. We don't provide food on your day off. Volunteers are responsible for all other expenses, including travel.
Work Days: 6 days a week (Monday - Saturday)
Arrival Days: Twice a week, every Monday and Thrusday! (UPDATED)
Accommodation: Our base will be located in Malitbog municipality in Southern Leyte, in between our selected schools. You can expect communal-style living with bunk beds and dormitory rooms. You will need to provide your own bedding (sleeping bag, air mattress, blankets, pillows etc.)
Weather: The typhoon season in the Philipines usually lasts between June and October. If you are arriving at that time, be prepared for a lot of rain, mud and humidity! It's recommended to bring a raincoat and waterproof boots (with a steel toes) for the site.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided during work days. Vegetarian diets can be accommodated upon request, but any other dietary preferences (vegan, gluten-free, etc.) should bring food or other items to supplement their meals. Please make sure to select this option in the waiver or inform your Volunteer Coordinator before arriving at the program
VEGETARIANS! Please note that if you are eating out, most of the items listed in the veggie section of menus have meat in them. Always ask if it contains meat or inform your waiter that you are vegetarian
WiFi: Not provided on the base. A local sim card and data packages can be bought either from the airport on arrival (recommended) or in the local town.
SIM cards that work best in this area are either Smart or Globe (while we reception doesn’t typically reach inside the house, Globe works best around base). Some phones can hold two sim cards. If yours is one of them, you can get both. This is an option if you’d like to have signal and access to data most of the time. Many areas don’t have great coverage, and locals sometimes have SIM cards of those two providers so they can always have some form of coverage.
Access: Approximately 3 to 4 hours drive from Tacloban (only domestic airport in Leyte), 3hrs from Ormoc City, 50 minutes from Maasin City. You may also take a 3-hour boat ride from Cebu to Ormoc and 3 hrs to Malitbog from that route. Tacloban City, Ormoc City, Maasin City and Sogod are towns where you can access a few ATMs, eateries and hotels and shopping centres. You will receive more detailed information on how to get to our base after your place on the program is confirmed.
