This program will be held in extreme conditions with limited resources, high humidity, and a fast-paced environment. It is suitable for volunteers experienced in disaster response or those prepared for very basic conditions.
Sleeping arrangements: We will be staying in a local house in a co-ed sleeping room, however, there are no beds available. Therefore, we will be sleeping on a floor and volunteers must bring a sleeping mat and a sleeping bag ideal for humid conditions.
Bathroom facilities: We will have access to one toilet and one shower inside of the house. To preserve water, which is very scattered on the island at the moment, we will have military-style showers.
Kitchen facilities - We are currently finalizing the base set up and the access to the kitchen will be confirmed by the end of Wednesday. However, we will provide volunteers with breakfast, lunch, and dinner during work days. We won’t have a refrigerator available and we’ll try to have a cooler.
Laundry - No laundry facilities on the island so volunteers will need to hand wash their laundry.
Our Project Development team is currently finalizing the base search. We will update you with photos in the upcoming days, however, be prepared for very basic conditions.
If you need to use the internet regularly, we recommend that you have a personal phone with data. You can purchase a local SIM card once arriving in Grenada. The recommended company is Digicel as it is the only provider with a service on Carriacou Island.
The SIM Card itself is 20 ECD ( 7.50 USD ). One Digicel store is close to the ferry - here.
Electricity will go through a generator, powered by fuel. There is a limited access to fuel, therefore
This means volunteers should:
Bring a power bank
Expect no refrigeration
Expect military showers in order to conserve water
Bring a battery-powered/rechargeable fan for your bed - hot/humid conditions
In Grenada, the power plugs and sockets are of type G (same as in the UK). Grenada operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz. You can find more information here. If necessary, please ensure you purchase a power adapter to charge your electrical items.
We provide three meals a day, six days per week. There will be no meal provided on your day off.
Please note that food options are limited on the island, therefore, you should expect limited variety in meals.
Vegetarian diets can be accommodated but vegans and those with specific dietary requirements will need to supplement - these need to be brought from home! We won’t have a refrigerator.
