The site comprises a kindergarten, a primary, and a secondary school. They are part of the CONAFE system, which provides base education to rural and marginalized communities. All three schools have suffered damages from the 2017 earthquakes and Hurricane Agatha that hit the area in June of this year.
While we provide adequate water breaks and there are some shaded areas of site, please come prepared for sun, high temperatures, humidity, and heavy rain at the construction site. This is a physically demanding and challenging work environment.
Tasks may change depending on the construction stage but can include manual excavation, backfilling soil, concrete pouring, hand mixing mortar, brick laying, heavy lifting, rebar/wood cutting & installation, paint removal, painting, landscape, and play ground design.
The day starts at around 5:40 am when our team wakes up to eat breakfast and get ready for work. Typically the work day on site is from 7:00 am - 4:00 pm. Worksite is a 10 minute walk from base. Please expect to walk to work everyday. After you return home from the worksite, there will be a mandatory volunteer meeting at 5:00 pm and then you will have a chance to unwind, relax and reflect on your day. Dinner is served around 5:30 pm. All volunteers must be back on base for curfew by 9:00 pm and quiet hours also begin at 9:00 pm. There is usually an activity in the evening such as movie night, lotteria, trivia or sometimes just swapping travel stories and getting to know the community members or staff and volunteers from around the world.
The following pictures are examples of work done on our previous All Hands and Hands program in Pochutla. They were selected to resemble the work that you are likely to perform in Barrio Nuevo Toltepec. Once our work starts, this page will be updated with pictures from the Barrio Nuevo Toltepec program specifically.
