Our goal is to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for the students in Shree Bandevi Basic School who have been exposed to unfavorable conditions for an extended period of time due to the 2015 earthquake. Along with the construction project, AHAH hopes to expand its impact in the areas by conducting training and engagement projects to empower the local communities.
The main project will provide one new disaster-resilient building with 3 new classrooms and rehabilitate the school compounds to enable the school to conduct classes in a safe environment impacting 240 students and 10 staff from ECD to grade 8. We will engage 10 staff members with a volunteer request of 20 and 6 local workers.
We will implement CSEB (Compressed Stabilized Earth Brick Technology); an innovative, sustainable, and disaster-resilient system. We will run the Female Mason Training project to train local women in resilient construction skills as a way to expand their economic resources and provide social and economic empowerment.
In conjunction with Relief Nepal, we will conduct training on Disaster Risk Reduction to increase DRR knowledge and best practices within the local community. Additionally, we will provide training in Child Protection and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene for the school community. We will provide training on a comprehensive maintenance manual for the school to ensure ownership to guarantee the relevance of new structures.
The construction work on-site includes site clearance, minor excavation work, debris removal, material transportation, rebar bending, foundation digging, mixing mortar and concrete, building forms for concrete pours, and finishing touches like painting and trim work. The start of the program may include some project ramp-up work, and the end of the program will include some program ramp-down activities.
We will be starting our days early! Breakfast will be available from 6:00 AM, and we will leave for the site at 7:00 AM. Lunch typically starts at 12 PM and then the work will continue between 1 and 4 pm. We will also factor in some 10-15 minute water breaks throughout the day to ensure everyone stays hydrated and gets some rest because the work could be intense.
After you return home from the work site, you will have a chance to unwind, relax, and reflect on your day as a part of our nightly team meeting. After that, we’ll serve dinner. Every All Hands and Hearts base has a curfew and quiet hours in place to ensure we all get enough rest before the next working day. Please remember that they are non-negotiable and apply both to staff and volunteers. We are taking our work very seriously, so we expect that you will understand and obey the rules to help us make this program a successful one!
