On April 25, 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal. It was the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal since the 1934 Nepal-Bihar Earthquake
The earthquake and its aftershocks affected an estimated 8 million people—more than a quarter of Nepal’s population. Nearly 9,000 people lost their lives, more than 22,000 were injured, and about 750,000 houses were damaged or destroyed. Hundreds of thousands of Nepalese were impacted and many were left homeless by the earthquake. About 16,000 schools were damaged or destroyed. In the worst affected areas, 90% of schools were destroyed.
The earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, killing 22 people, the deadliest incident on the mountain on record. The earthquake triggered another huge avalanche in the Langtang Valley, where 250 people were reported missing.

ALL HANDS AND HEARTS’ WORK IN NEPAL
Since responding to the earthquake in 2015, All Hands and Hearts has successfully operated programs in Kathmandu, Melamchi, Nuwakot, Bach Sind, Thulo, Haibung, Sindhuli Bajhe, Manakamana, Marin, Dudhauli, and Hariharpurgadhi, completing 28 schools in total (including 1 Health Post) and serving 4000+ students annually across Nuwakot, Sindhupalchowk, Makwanpur and Sindhuli districts of Nepal.
During our early response phases, All Hands and Hearts also completed the safe demolition of 38 schools, 33 homes, and 4 health posts and removed debris from over 180 sites. We also constructed 100 transitional homes, 52 toilets, and temporary learning centers in 3 schools, along with 1 temporary health facility center for the people who needed the help the most.
In addition to these projects, All Hands and Hearts has worked to implement water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) facilities at each of the schools constructed, including toilets and water filtration systems as needed.
