Character Development | Leadership | Accountability | Life Lessons
Bearcat Parents,
At Aledo Middle School, we take great pride in developing our student-athletes physically through strength training, speed development, competition, and athletic preparation. But we also believe that one of our greatest responsibilities as coaches goes far beyond the weight room and playing field.
Our goal is not just to build better athletes. Our goal is to help build better young men.
One of the ways we accomplish this is through our 2Words Character Development Program, created by Stephen Mackey, also known as Coach Mackey.
2Words is a character and leadership development curriculum designed specifically for student-athletes. Through short, engaging videos and meaningful conversations, our athletes learn valuable lessons about accountability, integrity, toughness, effort, teamwork, leadership, and making good decisions.
We believe athletics is one of the greatest classrooms for teaching life lessons.
Not every athlete will play varsity sports. Not every athlete will earn a college scholarship. But every athlete will face challenges, experience setbacks, work with others, and have opportunities to lead throughout their life.
That's why we believe character development is just as important as physical development.
Through 2Words, we want our athletes to understand:
Accountability: Taking ownership of their actions, attitude, and effort.
Leadership: Setting an example and positively influencing others.
Integrity: Doing the right thing, even when nobody is watching.
Mental Toughness: Learning to respond positively to adversity and challenges.
Teamwork: Understanding that being a great teammate is bigger than individual success.
Work Ethic: Recognizing that success comes from consistency, discipline, and preparation.
We believe these lessons are especially important for our 6th-grade Pre-Athletics students.
Before our young athletes ever step onto a 7th-grade football field, basketball court, track, or other competitive environment, we want them to understand what it means to represent themselves, their families, their school, and the Aledo Bearcats.
We want to establish expectations early and continue building on those lessons throughout 7th and 8th grade.
Our athletes will have opportunities to watch character development videos, participate in discussions, reflect on the lessons, and apply what they learn in everyday situations.
We want our kids to understand that being a leader doesn't always mean being the loudest person in the room. Sometimes leadership means showing up on time, helping a teammate, doing the right thing, being respectful, or giving great effort when things get difficult.
These are habits we want our athletes to carry into the classroom, their homes, their communities, and eventually high school.
At Aledo Middle School, we will continue challenging our athletes to become bigger, faster, stronger, and more competitive.
But we also want them to become more responsible, respectful, disciplined, and prepared for life.
We want to measure their growth in the weight room and on the track while developing the character that will guide them long after their playing days are over.
Our hope is that when these young men leave Aledo Middle School, they are not only better athletes but also better students, teammates, leaders, and individuals.
Thank you for trusting us with your kids and allowing us the opportunity to coach them, challenge them, and help prepare them for the future.
We aren't just building athletes. We're building future leaders.
GO BEARCATS!
