We are Aldersgate - a vibrant, inclusive Christian community growing in faith, love, health, and service located in Bellevue, WA.
Aldersgate United Methodist Church resides on the unceded land of the Duwamish Tribe - the People of the Inside, dxʷdəw?abš - what many know as King County. To learn more about and advocate for the federal recognition of the Duwamish Tribe’s people, culture, heritage, and land, please visit https://www.duwamishtribe.org/.
Childcare is available most Sundays. If there is no staff available, families are welcome to stay in the sanctuary, use the Family Room on the far right of the sanctuary, or hang out in the Narthex. Both rooms have live audio connections, so you will still be able to hear our worship service.
Scripture
“When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on the mountainside, and after he sat down and the disciples had gathered around, Jesus began to teach them:
“Blessed are those who are poor in spirit:
the kindom of heaven is theirs.
Blessed are those who are mourning:
they will be consoled.
Blessed are those who are gentle:
they will inherit the land.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice:
they will have their fill.
Blessed are those who show mercy to others:
they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are those whose hearts are clean:
they will see God.
Blessed are those who work for peace:
they will be called children of god.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of their struggle for justice:
the kindom of heaven is theirs.
Matthew 5:1-12 (Inclusive Bible)
For Sunday, February 1, the communion elements will consist of a common loaf of gluten-containing sourdough in addition to the individually wrapped certified gluten-free wafers.
In-person service: There will be a small round common loaf of bread that contains gluten and a common chalice (grape juice); these will be on the altar to use with the communion liturgy. This unsliced loaf will be broken during the liturgy.
In addition, there will be individually wrapped certified gluten-free wafers on both the smaller tables containing the communion cups. These wafers are manufactured on dedicated equipment (equipment used only for gluten-free products) in a dedicated facility (facility only
manufactures gluten-free products). The ingredients are garbanzo (chickpea) bean flour, potato starch, tapioca flour, whole grain sweet white sorghum flour, fava bean flour, and palm oil. These wafers are considered to be gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, peanut-free, and fish and shellfish-free. NOTE: To be considered gluten-free, the FDA requires the gluten content to be below 20 parts per million. The gluten content on these wafers is 2.5 parts per million.
Open individual juice cups will be used to serve the congregation. Sealed individual communion cups of grape juice are available on the smaller tables along with the individually wrapped wafers.
For the in-person communion service, as you are able, members of the congregation will come forward to receive a piece of communion bread either torn from the common gluten-free loaf (or ask for an individually wrapped wafer) and an individual juice cup. If you are of limited mobility, we will serve you at your seat. Please just raise your hand to help us identify you if you need to be served.
Instructions will be provided during the service to facilitate moving through the sanctuary.
Online service: For our online participants, the communion service will remain the same as it has been. You will provide your own communion elements. Please ensure that your communion elements are within reach when the communion liturgy starts.
Old Testament Reading:
“Hear now what YHWH says:
“Come, plead your case before the mountains,
and let the hills hear your voice!
Listen to YHWH’s indictment, you mountains
and you enduring foundations of the earth;
for YHWH has a dispute with the people,
and is putting Israel on trial.
O my people, what have I done to you?
How have I wearied you?
Give me an answer!
For I brought you up from the land of Egypt,
and redeemed you from the house of slavery;
and I sent Moses to lead you,
and Aaron and Miriam!
My people, call to mind the plans
devised by the ruler Balak of Moab,
and how Balaam ben-Beor answered him!
Remember the journey from Shittim to Gilgal,
and recall how YHWH brought you justice!”
“What shall I bring when I come before YHWH,
and bow down before God on high?” you ask.
“Am I to come before God with burnt offerings?
With year-old calves?”
Will YHWH be placated by thousands of rams
or ten thousand rivers of oil?
Should I offer my firstborn for my wrongdoings -
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?”
Listen here, mortal:
God has already made abundantly clear
what “good” is, and what YHWH needs from you:
simply do justice,
love kindness,
and humbly walk with your God.”
Mic 6:1-8 (Inclusive Bible)
