College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests are offered to students as an option for receiving college credit after their course of studies in high school. Varying amounts of credit can be awarded based on the scores received and the amount allowed for each individual college that grants CLEP credit. Please check with the college you have applied to before testing to make sure that the credit will be accepted.
The CLEP test is broken into three sections. Sections I and II are listening and account for 40% of the final score. These sections are made up of short dialogues, news reports, announcements or narratives. The answers are selected through multiple choice responses. Section III is reading and accounts for 60% of the final score. This portion of the test is broken into sections of short grammar sentences, short passages of grammar and vocabulary and longer reading passages with comprehensive questions in a multiple choice format for responses.
The CLEP test is scored on a scale of 20 to 80 with many colleges accepting slightly above or below 50 in the Spanish I test as the point where credit is awarded . Incorrect answers are not penalized, only right answers are counted in the score.
Each month of the year tests are offered throughout the country through CLEP Services for $77. A full listing of local testing centers, colleges and the credits that they offer with scoring guidelines can be found on the college board website or you can call the offices in Princeton, New Jersey at 1-800-257-9558 between the hours of 8 and 6 eastern time.
