The number one question we are asked by parents!
First and foremost, we want kids to be kids. School can be exhausting! It is so important for kids to have an outlet and time to do what they love. We absolutely believe in the power of play and the creativity that can come from free time. Please do not feel obligated to spend large amounts of additional time at home working with your child. We don't want them to reach the point of frustration!
Our number one recommendation is to read to and with your child. There is so much research out there highlighting the benefits of reading. Your child should have a free reading book from the school library, which is a great place to start. It is also helpful for kids to see you model a positive mindset around reading and read yourself. Even 20 minutes per night can make a difference.
We also love to find ways to naturally embed some learning into home. If you're baking, have kids measure out the ingredients! Building something? Have students read the tape measure! Can your child read the grocery list? Or write it? How about buying something from a concession stand? That's a great way to practice handling money and talking to adults! Telling time is also a great bonus for kids. It can also be helpful for students to have practice summarizing. If your kiddo watches a movie, could they summarize what it was about? Who were the main characters? What was the problem in the movie?
Does your family enjoy game nights? Here are some math games you can play with just a deck of cards. These are also some board games that can boost reading. If your child enjoys time on tablets or computers, here are some math and reading apps as well.
If you would like additional materials to do at home, please ask your general education teacher or special education teacher for resources.
