You are an integral part of the IEP team. As a parent of a child with an IEP, you have many rights. Before each meeting, we will review these rights with you:
The school is required to provide a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment.
Participation rights: As part of the IEP team, you have the right to provide information, participate in all meetings and make decisions regarding your child's education.
Notice rights: You will also receive a timely notice of meetings and be informed of any proposed changes or refusal of proposals.
Consent rights: At any time you may give, withhold, or withdraw your consent to an evaluation, re-evaluation, initial placement, billing of Medicaid or withdraw your consent for continued special education.
Records rights: You may also request to view records, ask that records be revised, or must consent before records are disclosed to others.
Independent Education Evaluation right: If you disagree with the evaluation done by the school and AEA, you may request an independent educational evaluation at no cost to you.
Dispute resolution rights: If you disagree with the team's decisions and we cannot come to a consensus, you may use any of IDEA's three dispute resolution options described in the booklet.
Transfer of rights: At age 18, these rights will transfer to the student.
We will also offer you the complete booklet of your rights at each meeting. Here is the PDF version.
