Our elementary utilizes Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to guide us in teaching students to be Ambitious, Respectful, and Resposible (ARR!). Staff has received training on this framework and continues to meet regularly to improve our model.
The basis of our work comes in the form of staff acknowledging positive behavior and explicitly teaching our expectations to students. Using PBIS, we have a common language and emphasis of what we will teach and reflect on with students. We are also trained on taking a tiered approach to students needing additional support in obtaining these life skills.
You may see a few posters hanging in our building that include what it looks like to be ambitious, respectful, and responsible in the hallway, lunchroom, bathrooms, buses, etc. Take a look next time you are in!
One of the staff and student favorite aspects of PBIS is celebrating student accomplishments. Students intermittently receive tickets to acknowledge their expected behavior, which can be used in a few different ways. We have individual rewards for students, such as special seating, lunch with the teacher, or using a pen to write. Some teachers use tickets to earn classwide rewards, such as a beach day, camp day, or pajama day. Finally, we also have a school wide goal that results in a larger celebration. Last year's favorite was Kona Ice!
We also have monthly assemblies to review our ARR expectations, build excitement for new goals, and celebrating goals that have been met. Keep an eye out for highlights posted on our school social media accounts!
