Douglas McCants was born on August 13, 1943, in Cincinnati, Ohio. His biological parents were John and Willa McCants. His father was a mechanic and his mother was a homemaker. Due to illness, he was raised by his aunt and uncle who owned a grocery store in Montgomery, Alabama. Their grocery store being located in the central area of town and also near a bus stop placed him directly in contact with the Bus Boycott. During that time, he would pass out flyers and spread information about the bus boycott. Later in life, he would enter the army during the Vietnam Era and then move on to enroll into Alabama State University in 1966 as an English and History major. During his time at ASU, he protested the conditions on the campus, which led to his expulsion. He also worked closely with SNCC due to their support of the protests. After the movement, he held various positions that worked closely with various communities such as community relations within the Justice Department in Atlanta and as a substitute teacher. He is now the father of three children named Jimmel, Sherri, and Corey. He has continued to be very vocal regarding politics through his blog titled Overwatch.
