Alaska State Society
The first chapter of the Alaska State Society, NSDAR, was organized in 1903 in Sitka – before we were a state!
“The primary object of the chapter was the establishment of a library, and considerable progress has been made in this direction. The Society, in conjunction with the Women’s Reading Club, occupies a building which is one of the oldest in Sitka. It stands on the side of one of the old Russian blockhouses.”
Part of the 1903-04 report to Smithsonian Institution from Mrs. M. F. Pendleton, AK Chapter Regent
Our Territorial and then State Society has evolved through time into five chapters, always holding to the National Society’s founding mission of promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism. These timeless overarching principles keep the National DAR and State Societies strong and vitally relevant.
