On June 10, 1952, five interested women met at the home of Organizing Regent, Helen Harrison Crowe, to initiate plans for the Anchorage chapter of the NSDAR. The Charter was approved on October 25, 1952. The chapter was named for the Organizing Regent’s ancestor, Colonel John Mitchell, who served in the Continental Army at Philadelphia, PA as Deputy Quarter Master General. Mitchell was Muster Master of the Pennsylvania Navy in 1775-1776, also Commissioner of Provisions of the Navy. He served in the Continental Army as Deputy Quartermaster General with the rank of Colonel from May 26, 1778, until honorably discharged Aug 15, 1780.
In 1801, John Mitchell founded the Scottish Rite Body of Masonry at Charleston, SC and wrote up all the degrees from 18th thru 33rd. He was the first Grand Commander and first 33rd Degree Mason. John Mitchell was one of the founders of Orphan House in Charleston, SC, which was the second to be founded in the country. He was also one of the original members of the Society of the Cincinnati.
