Sleeping Lady Chapter was organized and confirmed on December 10, 1980. Organizing Regent Ina Ayers wrote in a 1980 Letter to NSDAR: “Sleeping Lady is named for a landmark located across Cook Inlet, which can be seen from a great distance. There is a beautiful legend about the mountain concerning an Indian maiden whose lover went to war and never returned. The people did not want to tell her that he had died so when she laid down to rest, they covered her with leaves and such. They prayed she would sleep on and not awaken so they would not have to tell her of her lover’s death. To this day she is still sleeping. It is a very beautiful sight to see her sleeping during all the seasons.”
