Board of Regents' Policy establishes the structure of governance within the University of Alaska System in BOR Policy 03.01. This policy defines the purpose of governance as such:
provide an effective opportunity for university faculty, staff and students to play a meaningful role in matters affecting their welfare;
represent the viewpoints of university faculty, staff and students on regents’ policy, university regulation, and other matters affecting the interests of the university;
address through legislative action other matters as described in their approved constitutions;
advise the president and chancellors in a timely fashion and in a manner set forth in individual organizational constitutions; and
communicate to faculty, staff and students information which is of interest and concern to the university.
ASUAF is UAF's student governance organization. Faculty are represented through Faculty Senate and staff not represented by a union are represented by Staff Council.
Organized in January 1988, Faculty Senate consists of 39-42 faculty members elected proportionally from the faculty of each college and school. In addition to monthly plenary meetings, the standing and permanent committees meet regularly to carry out the majority of the work. The president, president-elect and committee chairs constitute an Administrative Committee which sets the full Senate agenda and coordinates the various activities of the Senate.
In addition, the Faculty Senate serves as a major part of UAF's institutional memory and provides information on programs, policies, procedures, formats and responsible individuals for accomplishing the academic tasks of the institution.
Faculty Senate meets the first Monday of each month from 1-3 p.m. in the Wood Center ballroom.
Staff Council represents and advocates for UAF employees not represented by a union. Over the years, Staff Council has been responsible for a number of employee benefit improvements, including: an additional University holiday - Martin Luther King Day; leave share program; and a flexible work schedule.
Members have worked on refining supervisory training, internal recruitment, the staff recognition and longevity awards, health and leave benefits, smoke-free workplace, development and implementation of the new salary system, correspondence with State legislators on bills concerning the retirement system and the University budget, and consultation with UA Human Resources on hiring procedures.
Staff Council meets the second Tuesday of each month from 9:30 a.m.-noon via Zoom.
Students, faculty and staff are represented at the University of Alaska system level through the Coalition of Student Leaders, Faculty Alliance and Staff Alliance:
Comprised of student government leaders from each UA campus student government, the Coalition of Student Leaders advises the university president and other university leaders on issues relevant to students.
Comprised of the president and vice-president of each university's faculty senates, Faculty Alliance represents faculty throughout the Universty of Alaska system.
Staff Alliance serves the classified and administrative, professional and technical staff throughout the University of Alaska system. Staff Alliance's primary focus is on human resources policy and employee benefits.
