DID YOU KNOW? It is an AISV expectation that IB teachers take on the responsibility of supervising EEs. AISV will pay a stipend to IB teachers if they take 3, 4, or 5 papers, but the teacher must make the request through the AISV Stipend/Reimbursement Request. It is based on the time spent with students, so please track your time.
Note: non-IB teachers who take on supervisor responsibilities are eligible for a stipend for even just 1 or 2 EEs.
Supervisors are required to:
undertake three mandatory reflection sessions with each student they are supervising (initial #1, interim #2, final Viva Voce #3)
be available for regular check-ins with students (minimum 3 informal check-ins)
spend 3-5 hours fulfilling supervisor responsibilities per student
record on the RPF the student’s attendance at each of the mandatory reflection sessions.
provide students with advice and guidance on research skills and methods appropriate to the pathway and subject(s) chosen, in conjunction with information sessions or workshops that may be organized by the school
discuss the choice of topic, pathway (subject-focused or interdisciplinary) and subject(s), the approach and the design of a suitable, focused, manageable research question
encourage and support students throughout the research and writing of the Extended Essay
ensure that the student satisfies appropriate legal and ethical standards with respect to health and safety, confidentiality, human rights, animal welfare and environmental issues
ensure that students have direct access to all the materials they need from this guide (including the assessment criteria) and the support material
ensure that students are familiar with the regulations governing the Extended Essay and subject-specific requirements
monitor the progress of the Extended Essay to offer guidance and to ensure that the essay is the student’s own work; this may include reviewing and discussing a piece of writing from the essay
read and comment on one draft only of the essay (no direct editing is permitted); this should take place after the interim reflection #2 session and before the final viva voce #3 reflection session
ensure that the student submits the final version of the essay before the final reflection session (viva voce) takes place, and that no changes are made to it subsequently
read the final version and, in conjunction with the viva voce, confirm its authenticity
using the IBDP EE rubric, score the essay for a predicted grade
NOTE: The 2027 EE update no longer requires the supervisor's comments that have traditionally accompanied the student's reflections.
