Dear Parents,
Happy Valentine’s Day! This is the season of celebrating love, friendship and partnership! I’d like to take a moment to thank you as a parent community for all of your support as we work together toward ensuring your children’s optimum learning. I greatly appreciate the chance to see many of you each day or to have the opportunity to meet or just have a quick chat. Our work with your children is a gift; our partnership with you as parents is a greatly appreciated pleasure.
On that same note, I want to take a moment to thank the amazing PTO for their constant support and for their efforts to make this month’s celebration of reading so exciting and meaningful for our students. The book swap engaged many children in both sharing and choosing books to enrich their reading lives. Thank you to all of the parents who worked the tables throughout the day. There is just something wonderful about gathering around books and all of the stories that lie inside! Thank you, PTO!
Additionally, I would like to add my appreciation to Ms. Marnie and the teachers in grades 1-2 for their collaborative efforts in presenting the performing arts performances. The children did an excellent job of showing us what they have been working on through drama and song within a very fascinating cultural context. In addition, the students in grades 3-4 offered “informances” that provided a window into their passions and learning around a variety of different music and dance themes.
Our next assembly is scheduled for February 24th.
Please join in the annual book fair designed to offer new and exciting books to our community. Books will be available in the library from 7:30 to 3:00 pm, February 24 - 26.
Students are invited to make a pencil case/pouch/box by using only recycled materials from home. They will submit it to their teachers or drop it in the library before Tuesday, February 18th. One winner will be chosen from each grade. Competition winners will be announced on March 2nd.
Performing Arts Program - Please join us to learn more about this year’s program. Our performing arts teachers from elementary, middle and high school will be offering an indepth look into the program elements.
An email has been sent via Ms. Temi Sido from the International Day Committee requesting clarity on which nationality your child will represent. This information and a link to the form is also available on the homepage of this newsletter. Please take time to complete this quick survey as it will help them organize this aspect of the celebration more efficiently. We are hoping to ensure that the children sit with their appropriate country teams and go on stage without any delay.
Form to be filled out by all parents for each child: Nationality Representation for International Day 2020
Student-led conferences are right around the corner. Please make sure to hold this date as our teachers and students will be providing an opportunity for you to learn more about the progress of your child’s learning. Teachers will be sending out a sign-up link so that you can schedule those times most convenient for your family. We look forward to seeing you then!
AISL prides itself as a diverse school community focused on student learning. Personal presentation is a value as is noted in our policy on appropriate dress. The intent of the AISL elementary, middle and high school Uniform Expectations are to ensure that all students are “conservatively” attired in a manner befitting the AISL private school setting. This includes hair color. As a friendly reminder, if a student chooses to color his/her hair, the hair color (including highlights) should be that which is found in the natural human hair color spectrum, in order to ensure it is appropriate and acceptable for AISL standards. We appreciate your understanding.
Child safety is our number one priority. Please note that it is important for our students to be picked up according to their specific dismissal time. Beyond these times, we do not have teachers or IAs in place for supervision. All students in K-4 are dismissed at 2:30pm. Should a student be in afterschool activities, the dismissal time is at 3:30 pm. Students should not be on campus unattended by a parent or guardian after this time. A middle or high school sibling does not count as a guardian. For students with siblings in middle and high school, we do offer after school care from 2:30 to 3:00 pm. If you are interested in having your child attend this option, or you foresee any late pick up, please contact Ms. Tosin at tjegede@aislagos.org. Additionally, please note that any children without supervision will be asked to sit in the office until a parent/guardian arrives for them. Thank you for your understanding.
This upcoming 4-day weekend is nicely timed as all can use a short break. I hope that you and your families enjoy this time together. We will resume as normal on Tuesday, February 18th!
Warm regards,
Melissa Schaub
Interim Elementary Principal
