When moving overseas, it’s hard to decide what to bring and what to leave behind. Some people decide to send big shipments. If you choose to go this route, contact our HR department, as they have a recommended company for moving and shipping large amounts.
However, many people have found it to be much easier and simpler to bring everything they need in suitcases. On international flights, each traveler is usually allowed two large suitcases. For most, that isn’t enough. So rather than paying a shipping company, most of us just pay excess baggage fees and send everything on the plane (some of us have brought up to 20 pieces of luggage on one flight!). However, if you plan to bring a large amount of excess baggage, it is a MUST to contact the airline in advance.
Another advantage of sending your belongings as baggage is that it arrives with you. When you ship with a company, it will usually arrive 2-4 weeks after your arrival in Jeddah, which can be inconvenient for some.
Shipping, in whatever way you choose, it is covered up to a certain amount. Check your contract for the amount and remember to keep these receipts! Also, many teachers who shipped multiple boxes and a lot of personal items ended up realizing that they really didn’t need to send what they did. If you have any uncertainties about what to bring, reach out and we will help you!
Customs
There are certain things that are not allowed to be shipped or brought into Jeddah. Your shipping company will probably give you an extensive list. The most important things to leave behind/not ship are alcohol, pornography and pork products and keepsake holiday and religious items. Most people have not had any big problems with customs. Typically they do not search bags unless something suspicious shows up on the scan. It isn’t as scary as the internet might make it out to be.
