Taxes

Abington Heights School District relies heavily on local taxes to support its operation. Approximately 70% of the district's budget is provided by local taxpayers in greatest part through property tax.

The district's ability to raise property tax is limited not only by an inflation index established by law but also by the limited resources of our taxpayers.

Abington Heights is offering raises to its teachers that will increase costs each year to our local taxpayers. The union's proposed raises far exceed our taxpayers' ability to pay as demonstrated in the graph below. The union's salary proposal alone exceeds the district's legal ability to raise revenue based on recent inflation index data.

Abington Heights has completed a comparative analysis of the district's and union's proposals strictly limited to salary. It is evident that the union's proposal is unaffordable without considering the added costs of medical insurance and other benefits demanded by the union. The Abington Heights School Board wants to reach a fair deal with its teachers. It will not agree to terms that threaten the sustainability of the school district and the services it provides to our students.
