The Abington Heights teachers' union notified the superintendent on June 6, 2017 that it will strike beginning on September 12, 2017.
The strike will force the closure of all schools. The union has not provided a date for the conclusion of its strike. State law allows the teachers to strike so long as the last day of school is no later than June 15, 2018. As a result, the strike could be as short as one day or last until the end of September. The union is only required to give 24 hours notice when it decides to end its strike. Students will be required to make up all strike days. Teachers receive their full yearly salary regardless of the length of the strike under Pennsylvania law.
Abington Heights' negotiations committee has met with the union eleven times in 2017 in an effort to reach a settlement. Additional meetings are scheduled through August and September. Students, parents and the broader community must be prepared for a strike in the event a settlement is not reached prior to September 12, 2017.
