When is the first official day of practice for the 2025 season?
Answer: Per AIA by law no AZ swim team may start before Aug. 11th with competition season starting the first week of September and ending Oct. 30th.
What are the practice requirements?
Answer: Like any other Millennium team, we expect commitment to our program while in season. Athletes are expected to be at all afternoon high school practices. Practice times may vary but typically they run from 2:45-4:30 Mondays-Fridays.
May I swim on my club team while I am swimming for Millennium?
Answer: You may compete in club swim meets as long as they are not conflicting with Millennium Team Events. You may not practice or compete in relays while attending club events including club practices. No club team names may be on swim caps or swim attire including bags at AIA swim meets. We want our Millennium swimmers to wear Millennium gear to all meets and to wear a Millennium swim cap to practice. While some swimmers train with other teams in the off season, when we are at Millennium practices and meets we are MILLENNIUM. Club swim practices do not count towards Millennium practice requirements.
How to I qualify for the post season competition: The State Meet?
Answer: AIA Teams may participate in no more than 4 qualifying invitationals throughout the season. Only times earned at the State Qualifiers count for state qualifications. Athletes must not only meet the Division 1 Qualifying standard by the end of competition season, they also must be in the top 40 for each individual event once coaches submit their final meet entries. Our relays must also meet a time standard and be in the top 30 by the end of the competition season. Final Division 1 state qualifications are competitive. It is an honor to make the state team whether that is through a relay or through an individual event. Coaches across the state will nominate qualified athletes and relays for events by Nov. 1st. AIA officials will announce state qualifiers by Nov. 2nd or 3rd. The state meet will be Friday and Saturday Nov. 7th and 8th. Dive state finals will be Wed. Nov. 5th. Friday will be prelims for individual events only and Saturday will be finals for individuals and timed finals for all relays.
How many state qualifiers will Millennium attend each season?
This depends on funds that we have in our tax credit account. Each district is different across the state, but our goal is to provide 4 opportunities each season. Please consider making a donation. Do I get to pick my events at swim meets?
Athletes will let the coaching staff know 3 events that they would like to swim for the 2025 season in Aug. during one of our first team meetings during RTI. It is to the athlete's benefit to swim 2 of their 3 events multiple times at state qualifiers to earn the most competitive time he or she can. Practice is where you show the coaches that you are right for a certain event. Commitment, work ethic, and attitude will always influence coaches' decisions on events for a meet including relays.
Where and when are the practices?
Answer: We practice at the Agua Fria Aquatics Center located at the Southwest Valley YMCA on Litchfield and Thomas.. For after school practices, a bus will be available taking students from Millennium to the pool. All athletes must be picked up at the YMCA by 4:35. All athletes will complete the practice transportation waiver to allow for parents to transport their student to and from practice. Athletes of driving age may drive themselves and a family member to and from practice once the waiver is completed.
How many events will I do at a swim meet?
Answer: AIA and NFHS Swimming and Diving allows up to 2 individual events and 2 relays per meet. Dive counts as 1 individual event. An athlete may swim only relays but would be limited to 3 relays and 1 individual event. Not all Millennium swimmers and divers will be guaranteed 2 individual meet entries per meet or relay opportunities. Remember that priority for event entries will be based on: Commitment, Work ethic, and Attitude both at practice and meets. Competitive times will be a by product of the above core values.
How many athletes make the Millennium Swim and Dive Team?
Answer: Due to limited lane space at our practice facility, the team will be capped up to 32 athletes total. Numbers may vary slightly due to interest, athleticism, and swimming skills. We do have 2 days of team tryouts which will include time trials on the 2nd day. Team rosters will be posted by the evening of the 2nd day of tryouts. All athletes will receive a next steps email concerning the final team rosters.
How do I earn a Varsity Letter for Swim and Dive?
Answer: You must meet 2 Varsity Letter time requirements in 2 different events during the season. These times are posted on the website and are included in the team contract. These may be achieved in any meet during the season. If you swim at state either as individual or on a relay, you will automatically earn the Varsity Letter Award.
Will I miss school for swim meets?
Answer: School is always our priority; however, occassionally we will have to leave school early to get to our competition site on time for warm ups. We like to host a team breakfast in Mrs. Cox's room on the morning of away meets so you can store your team bag in her room during the day if you need to do so. Bus departures will vary. Mrs. Cox will let attendance know who will be missing classes for the meet. Sometimes it takes 2-3 days to see attendance updated. We ask that both students and parents be patient during this time with attendance and school officials. It is the student's responsibility to get to the bus on time for away meets. Students MAY not drive themselves to a meet if you miss the bus. There will be NO SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENT dismissing you from class. It is your responsibility to let your teacher know at the beginning of class and to get to the bus on time. We will not wait for athletes who are not responsible.
May I go home with my parents or grandparents after an away swim meet?
Answer: Athletes are expected to ride the bus home with the team after an away meet. This is a great time for team bonding. If there is a need to ride home with parents, they must clear this with Mr. Gordillo in advance and Mrs. Cox must be notified of this approval in advance.
What is the team uniform?
Answer: The team uniform is a standard black suit with the school logo. Girls will get 3 choices of back style and boy will get 2 choices of a brief or jammer. Families will purchase the suits through the team boosters. Athletes will be sized for suits the first Thursday after tryouts by Ski Pro. Once the suit is ordered, they can not be returned due to the custom design. Team swim caps will be provided by the school. Athletes will get 1 cap per season. Team suits are expected to be worn at ALL DUAL MEETS, and tech suits may be worn only at state qualifiers. Millennium Swim and Dive will have an online store that opens the Friday before tryouts and extend for 2 weeks after that. There will be team apparel as well as team equipment available for purchase. A portion of all proceeds will go to our swim and dive activities account. Boosters will also have team shirts available for purchase.
What kinds of team events do we participate in inside and outside of the swim season?
Answer: We have our annual big/little pool party at the Litchfield Rec center the first Saturday after tryouts. We will have several restraunt nights after home swim meets. We will also support another Millennium team both inside and outside of our season. We will participate in our Homecoming Parade and Trunk or Treat activities as long as we don't have a meet scheduled for those events. In the off season, we will have a Christmas party and we will honor our scholar athletes in January. Next year a major goal for the team is to provide a youth swim clinic during the summer for our community.
How good is Millennium Swim and Dive?
Answer: We are a championship level team. We have won 2 Boys Division 2 State Titles. We were 4th place in Division 1 for the 2025 season and 3rd place in 2024 season. The 2025 girls team placed 12th in the Division 1 State Meet. The 2025 boys 400 Free Relay were D1 State Champions as well as Senior Cole Faut winning an individual state championship in the 100 freestyle. and both were All American Times. We also had the 3rd best Medley Relay at the 2025 D1 State Meet with Ewan Cain, Justus Heilshorn, Zac Clark, and Cole Faut. The 2024 Boys Medley Relay was Division 1 State Champions. Both Boys and Girls were the Agua Fria District Champions for the 2025 and 2024 seasons. We hold ourselves to a high standard and aim to be one of the most competitive high school swim teams in the state of Arizona. We will model commitment, discipline, and integrity in all that we do both on campus, at meets, and on the pool deck. We aim to establish a team culture of No I can'ts or I wont's. Hard work will be rewarded and success will follow.
