AFS International advises all participants to register with their embassy in the hosting country to help ensure their safety. Embassies generally recommend that any citizen of their country who will reside in Japan for more than 3 months register with the embassy or the nearest consulate. Registration lets them know that a citizen is in Japan and makes it easier to provide you with assistance in emergency situations.
You are responsible for the initial registration and reporting any changes of your address and your departure from Japan. Please contact your embassy or nearest consulate for specific procedures. Some countries enable their citizens to register online through the website of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
