The students in year 3 had the opportunity to learn a new sport before any other year group in the school. The session started off with the students learning the basic skills involved within fencing without using any of the equipment. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience of learning a new skill and they got more excited when they had the chance to use the equipment. Each student had the chance to try on the jacket which is used within fencing, the protective helmet and foil lames to compete within one to one combat. The students really enjoyed the experience and the Percy Sport team would like to extend their gratitude to the company who came in to deliver the session.

Percy Shurmer Academy Boys- Birmingham City Competition (17/01/18)

Percy played in the BCFC competition against a variety of schools across Birmingham, the competition was exciting throughout with some excellent football skills on show. Before the start of the tournament the team had the chance to meet a professional footballer called Isaac Vassell who answered questions from the boys and signed autographs. Percy started the tournament against a very strong Oaks team, Percy dominated the early stages and created early chances and came close to scoring only for the Oaks to break away and take an early lead. Percy continued to play well as a team; the Oaks continued to drive forward and scored another well taken goal. Percy managed to get one goal back through a break away and was well taken by the Percy forward. Within the closing moments of the game the Oaks managed to secure two more goals through moments of excellence from their players. Percy moved onto the next match vs Bellfield, which was a really close game with both teams playing exceptional football, Percy took an early lead and managed to hold onto the lead until the remaining 3 minutes. This is when Bellfield took control of the game and scored 3 goals in quick concession. Percy continued to find a way back into the game but as Percy pushed for a goal gaps were left in defence and this meant another goal was conceded. Percy then had a break in fixtures so this gave the team an opportunity to watch the other teams play. Kings Norton was the next opposition to face Percy; the game was end to end with both teams creating many opportunities. Only for the goalkeepers producing magnificent saves both teams would have been on the score sheet. Kings Norton finally made the breakthrough a long range effort which flew past our goalkeeper, Percy responded in fantastic fashion and attempted to get back into the game but as Percy were attacking Kings Norton broke away and three times found the back of the net. Percy found a way through a stern defence and capitalised on a mistake in defence to score the goal. This is exactly what happened in the next two matches against Castle Bromwich and Regents Park, in both games Percy showed great resilience and determination to carry on playing free flowing football. All this outstanding play was rewarded in the last match when Percy played Hill Stone in the last match, Percy took an early lead through an excellent team goal in which every member of the team touched the ball and was completed by an excellent finish. Percy had the momentum and was pushing forward to get a second goal but then Hill Stone then quickly finished off a magnificent move with a shot from outside the box which flew straight to the top corner. However Percy was not deterred from conceding a goal and again continued to attack which resulted in another goal. Percy then for the next couple of minutes closed down every attack which Hill Stone had limited them to chances. Percy ended the game very strongly and came away with the victory and the 3 points. Percy had an excellent tournament and showed excellent attitude throughout, all the students thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Percy played lovely free flowing basketball throughout the game and came very close to extending their lead on numerous occasions. As the game edged towards the final minutes Percy’s hard work was undone by an excellent team basket from Bells Farm to make the score 2-2.This is how the score ended, an outstanding effort from both teams. Percy were meant to play two games the following night of the league against St Martins and Chad Vale but due to snow both games were called off so all teams were awarded a draw which meant that Percy picked up 2 points. The next league night of matches Percy first played a very strong well drilled Yardley wood side. Yardley wood started the game very strongly and opening the scoring within the first minute. This game was end to end with both teams attacking whenever they had the chance; Percy produced a brilliant flowing move with ended with Percy scoring a brilliant layup to make the score 2-2. The game was really close until the last couple of minutes in which where Percy pushed more people forward and left gaps in defence which Yardley wood capitalised upon and the game ended 12-4 to Yardley wood. The final game of the night was against top of the league Hollywood A , for the first half Percy kept Hollywood to minimal chances and only long range shots. Within the second half Hollywood started to attack more directly and created chances which they took advantage of and started to score points. Hollywood won the game however Percy played exceptionally well. The last game of the league Percy unfortunately lost to Oaks which brought the league to an end.
