Mental Health and Wellbeing

At Percy Shurmer, mental health awareness is integrated into the curriculum, as well as being taught discretely in PSHE lessons. During oracy lessons, children are taught the vocabulary and skills necessary to express their emotions effectively. Children at Percy understand the importance of being responsible for their emotions, and during PSHE lessons and events such as 'Children's Mental Heath Week' are given strategies for dealing with negative emotions. Teachers encourage dialogue surrounding mental health and emotions with the children incidentally through role play, storytelling and the broader curriculum.

At Percy Shurmer we:

  • have a mental health champion - Miss Yates

  • promote self-esteem and ensure children know that they are valued individuals

  • encourage children to be confident

  • help children to develop emotional resilience and to manage setbacks

  • help children to understand their emotions and feelings better

  • help children feel comfortable sharing any concerns or worries

  • promote the importance of being kind and working together

  • help children socially to form and maintain relationships and focus on teamwork to build community links.
