Computing

Intent

We aim to prepare our learners for their future by giving them the opportunities to gain knowledge and develop skills that will equip them for an ever-changing digital world. Knowledge and understanding of ICT is of increasing importance for children’s future both at home and for employment. Our intention is that Computing also supports children’s creativity and cross-curricular learning to engage children and enrich their experiences in school.

Our Computing curriculum focuses on a progression of skills in digital literacy, computer science, information technology and online safety to ensure that children become competent in safely using, as well as understanding, technology. These strands are revisited repeatedly through a range of themes during children’s time in school to ensure the learning is embedded and skills are successfully developed.

Implementation

We deliver the Computing National Curriculum objectives through the Purple Mash Scheme of learning. Via Purple Mash, computing is organised into three core strands, as outlined in the National Curriculum: computational thinking, digital literacy and information technology. Within the substrands, knowledge is sequenced hierarchically, with attention paid to prior computing knowledge and the knowledge that children will have from other related disciplines, particularly mathematics and science.

In addition, computing is utilised in other areas of the curriculum where children use their digital literacy skills to create content in subjects such as English, History, and Design and Technology. Through this approach, we aim to give our pupils a practical and connected knowledge of computing and the use of digital technologies that unlocks the wider curriculum and the world they inhabit. Our school Media Team and Percy Press regularly produce material, including newspapers, for the children as part of our provision.

We deliver the ‘Digital Literacy’ strand of the Computing National Curriculum objectives through the Project Evolve scheme of learning. This ensures that knowledge-rich coverage which covers:

Our Computing Curriculum meets and exceeds the content of the National Curriculum, covering all aspects and adding in further depth and knowledge. For example:
