Activity Week 1 -

Spring Term

Welcome to Hill's Class

Our first Activity Week of Spring Term was all about 'Winter, Fairy Tales and Vehicles' and had a focus on the subjects of art, design technology, drama and science.

Intent - During activity week, the children will be able to plan and design their own, unique form of transport for a fairy tale character, seeing how far it can travel and creating their own versions of their story/next chapter/song/dance to go with it.

Implementation - The children were able to work in different groupings; on their own, with a partner, in a small group or as a year group or whole class. They were able to work together and communicate ideas and theories before planning, designing and making or rehearsing, refining and performing.

Impact - The children will experienced / tried / applied / refined the following skills… Planning, designing, making and using different fixing and attaching techniques. Evaluating and refining plans to achieve a goal. Working with others to plan a story and/or song and/or dance.

Working individually or in pairs, all the children designed and made their own model vehicles using different fixing and joining techniques and materials. Afterwards, they had the chance to evaluate their designs (orally for reception children) and thought about what they could do to improve them.

Reception children made bread to go with the soup which was made by ks1 children. They talked about how the mixture of flour and yeast is dry and changes when water is added. It is left to 'rise' after being kneaded once then kneaded again before going into the oven to bake.

Ks1 children investigated ingredients for soup, used all their senses. They then helped prepare the ingredients and saw the different changes to the mixture as it was cooking. They wrote their own recipes and were also able to answer some mathematical problems based on the ingredients themselves.

Ks1 children wrote instructions for how to get to space. They used imperative (bossy) verbs and thought about the correct order of instructions. They then wrote a recount of a journey into space.

All the children listened and watched carefully as the process of making this winter scene was explained and modelled to them. They then went off to create their own masterpieces using masking tape, watercolour washes and charcoal for shadowing and tree details.

Tickets and flyers for our productions featuring some of our Fairy Tales enacted by Hill's Class children. They performed an 'advert' in the break for their own yummy, winter soup!

Summary of the week

This Activity week the children learnt about:

The different skills they needed to work with others - speaking and listening, agreement and resolution, compromise and seeing things from other people's perspective.

Finding out what they were capable of - confidence, self-efficacy, willing to try again, believing different approaches might work and willing to TRY different things.

Having the opportunity to talk and discuss - what they had learnt, why they had been learning certain things, what they could improve or do differently, how they felt about their learning, finished projects and performances.

Did the children 'Discover What's Possible'? By listening to their responses, reasoning and written accounts, I think they certainly did!
