As a result of adopting these core principles, an AET Pupil will:
Read, speak and write with fluency, purpose and pleasure
Acquire a life-long appreciation for the value of language and its application
Craft an authentic voice and recognise its impact on others
Be confident and effective communicators in contexts, both familiar and unfamiliar
Use communication to refine their thinking
Understand a writer’s craft and use this knowledge to inform their own choices
Develop the habit of reading and know its power
Compare and synthesise texts
Critically evaluate texts, always asking ‘why’
Engage in a cycle of explore → craft → refine →
An entitlement for all pupils to access a variety of high quality texts as part of an immersive journey
The precise teaching of the many skills required to engender mastery in English
To nurture a joy of the exploration of language
An integral interleaving of prior skills
The continuous evaluation of pupils’ current learning
An unswerving dedication to creating an accurately pitched learning journey for every pupil
To provide plentiful opportunities for pupils to share and celebrate their voices within and across contexts
To embed knowledge of ‘cultural capital’ through the development of contextual understanding
Note: Phonics, handwriting and some spelling are taught additionally outside this programme
Example Progression: Poetry
Please note: The quantity of texts used within each unit will vary at the teachers’ discretion. Texts should be chosen based on how well they exemplify the skills being taught. For example, one key story may form the core of a unit; however, additional texts (stories, poems, non-fiction) may be used to supplement this.
Example: Year 5
