We offer a hands-on experience in all of our music classes.
For our Pre-k through 1st-grade students, we have a general music class where we learn the foundations of music and singing using the Orff Schulwerk method and Kodaly Method. We learn how to handle instruments, how to act in an ensemble, how to make songs of our own, and how to have fun and express ourselves with music.
For our 2nd through 4th-grade students. We implement what we've learned in our younger years in regards to rhythm, pitch, melody, and learn how to use an instrument that requires more fine motor skills. This prepares students for some of the more "intimidating" instruments in beginner band class.
For our 5th and 6th-grade students, we have Beginner Band. The students go to a band drive at the end of the year to try out the various instruments they are curious about. They can choose from the following:
Flute Clarinet Saxophone Trumpet French Horn Trombone Euphonium Tuba Percussion
We encourage every student to try each instrument so they can see what they're the strengths show best, and thus what they will enjoy learning most on. We aim to include these students in the annual Winter and Spring Concerts, as well as any other performance opportunities available to them.
For 7th through 12th-grade students, the students continue on the instruments they started 5th and 6th grade with, but to a more advanced level. Once students get to 7th grade, they become part of the main band ensemble. This means they are now a member of the Longhorn Marching Band that performs every Friday night at football games as well as, the Winter and Spring concerts. This group of students also competes in the ATSSB All-Region tryouts, and lastly UIL Solo & Ensemble competition.
