Reading

IPICK Books

In order to grow as a reader, we must be reading books that are interesting to us, something we enjoy and are at our right level. In order to determine if we can read and comprehend, we open a book to a page and stick out our fist. Every time we get to a word that we don't know, we stick our a finger. If we get to four or five fingers it is probably too difficult. After reading the page, we must be able to explain what happened to show we comprehend.

I can use metacognitive skills to help me understand reading (and math and science and social studies and life...)

By.... Summarizing, inferring, asking questions, using background knowledge, determining importance, monitoring for meaning, visualizing.

I can identify main idea and key details.

By... determining the topic and what the author wants us to know about the topic.

By... Finding evidence from the text to support the main idea and using, "according to the text."

Learning Target: I can describe characters in a story.

By... identifying their character traits, emotions and motivations and using evidence from the text.
