Black Belts work on projects across different functional areas in the company. Black Belt projects are fairly more complex and with a higher financial return compared to Green Belt projects. Black Belts are normally employed in positions of technical leadership within a business. Typically a Black Belt is a project team leader who facilitates Lean Six Sigma teams in applying tools and techniques to solve problems and support the team in applying more advanced tools and techniques. Black Belts are aware of the major issues in the company, are proactive, analytical, and results orientated. People who are suitable for Black Belt training are those who either are already technical leaders or those being ear marked for future technical leadership roles. Suitable candidates for Black Belt training are those with a combination of leadership skills and an aptitude for engineering and technical work.

Green Belts work on projects within their function and area of control. Green Belt projects are usually less complex and with lower financial return than Black Belt projects. A Green Belt is normally involved in identifying improvement opportunities, collecting data and applying basic tools and techniques. Green Belts are usually members on a Six Sigma team. A more experienced Green Belt may take on team leader role. A Green Belt remains in the existing job but applies six sigma tools and techniques in their work environment when required. Green Belts have a propensity for solving problems and resolving issues, are proactive, analytical and resourceful people. People who are suitable for Green Belt training are those either already in problem solving roles or those who are ear marked to work on problems in their functional areas.

Yellow Belts support the implementation of Lean Six Sigma projects within their work area. Yellow Belt projects are of low complexity and normally yield lower financial returns than either Green Belt or Black Belt projects. Yellow Belts need to be sufficiently knowledgeable in six sigma concepts and principles to support Green Belt in defining processes, gathering data, solving simpler work related problems, implementing changes, and keeping controls in place to maintain the gains. Yellow Belts may be team members in Yellow Belt or Green Belt project teams. Yellow Belts are well versed in their job processes, and are proactive in identifying and analysing problems. People suitable for Yellow Belt training are those who are either already in work group leadership roles or those who are being ear marked for such positions.
