Everyone's path to happiness is different. Here in Northamptonshire, we apply the 10 Keys to Happier Living from Action for Happiness to make life happier, more fulfilling, and active in our communities. Together, they spell GREAT DREAM.
Happiness isn't just a solo journey; it is a community movement built on everyday actions and meaningful connections, all year long. Action for Happiness' Year of Happier Living is designed to help us all focus on what truly matters, shifting our habits month by month. Guided by the scientifically backed "10 Keys to Happier Living" and the foundational GREAT DREAM framework, each month brings a fresh theme focusing on different aspects of wellbeing—from giving back and connecting with others, to managing emotions and finding resilience.
In Northamptonshire, our local 'Move Northamptonshire: Active, Happier, Together' Campaign is all about moving from "I-llness" to "We-llness"—recognising that when we move together, we find the strength to weather life’s storms.
Utilising the monthly themes, we focus on five simple ways to nurture change in our local communities:
Move: Finding joy in physical movement to boost our mood and support our health.
Place: Rooting our actions in the heart of our own heritage and local neighbourhoods.
Active: Embracing small, "tiny" habits that make being active feel doable every day.
Kinder: Using the 10 Keys to Happier Living to nourish our internal wellbeing.
Together: Building social well-being through kindness, altruism, and caring for one another.
Whether you are just starting out in life, navigating busy years, or ageing well, this approach is designed for you. By sharing stories and using consistent, relatable language, we are working together to build a community where everyone has the autonomy and support to thrive.
This month is all about intentionally noticing and cultivating small, pleasant moments in our day-to-day lives to help boost our health, lower our stress, and build our resilience. Vanessa King, Head of Psychology at Action for Happiness, shares three simple, science-backed tips to help us harness the power of positive emotions this month:
Be a spotter of beauty: Actively look for things that bring you a sense of wonder each day—whether that is a kind gesture between strangers, a moment out in nature, or a piece of music you love.
Add more art into your life: Boost your wellbeing by getting creative yourself or enjoying the creativity of others, whether that means listening to a favorite podcast, crafting, or visiting a local library or gallery.
Find something to look forward to each day: Take a few moments every morning to think of one positive thing you have planned for later, and when you finally get to it, pause to fully slow down and savor the moment.
