I am currently working with fifth graders in whole-class settings and in math and reading small groups.
Every week, I work with each fifth grade class on enriching activities. Our focus is on contributing to the historical record about the COVID pandemic: what experiences do children in Asheville have, related to the pandemic? What are their questions, and what are their thoughts? We will write, interview, photograph, and otherwise make a record of these experiences.
Our small math group focuses on accelerating and deepening understanding of the fifth grade curriculum. We are studying rules for finding a number's factors and will explore similar subjects such as the square/cube ratio and how it relates to area and volume.
Our reading group is conducting a study of the amazing novel Sal and Gabi Break the Universe. Each week, students read a selection and write about their thoughts; we meet to discuss, focusing on grounding the discussion in textual evidence.
I am also meeting each week with third and fourth grade classes to offer enrichment lessons. We are currently learning about the CogAT, or Cognitive Abilities Test, a universal screener used by the AIG program to identify students that may require additional services.
I meet with kindergarten classes monthly to teach lessons about the brain and about growth mindset.
This year, I am working one day a week at Hall Fletcher, where I offer similar lessons.
