We believe all students are naturally inquisitive. We want all students to feel successful in school. Our Makerspace provides a space for students to explore, build, make, create, and take risks. While in Makerspace, students hone their collaboration and communication skills through group projects.
2023 was the 10th year students at Ira B Jones have participated in Hour of Code. Coding teaches students critical thinking and problem-solving. It supports their development of collaboration and communication skills. It allows everyone to be creative and feel successful! These students are digital natives and whether they go on to work in the field of technology or not- they learn a little bit about the behind the scenes working of technology they use.
3rd, 4th and 5th grade students were able to come to the Makerspace before school from 7:30-8 to create projects of their choice. They were taught how to use specific tools and materials then encouraged to work with their peers to challenge themselves to a build.
Many teachers use a variation of classroom economy where students earn money, or points of some kind. Students can 'buy' Makerspace time. During this time, students invite a friend or two to come to the Makerspace and use our available materials.
This is the 3rd year we have participated in the Wonder League Robotics Competition using Dash the robot. Students were given challenges then worked with their team to code, design and solve the task at hand. We received a grant from ACSF to purchase Class Connect, a program to that supports students as they learn how to code Dash and upload their code for each mission.
The theme of the competition this year was Dash's Amusement Park.
