This school year, Ms. Page’s role and schedule shifted to allow for more instructional support, especially in the implementation of the Wit and Wisdom ELA curriculum. Instead of being part of the K-2 specialist rotation as in years past, this year Ms. Page had a fully flexed schedule. Each class K-5 still had a weekly library time, but there was more flexibility to push into classrooms and collaborate with teachers. Highlights of this collaboration included weather research with second grade, animal research with first grade, fifth grade lessons on evaluating sources, and co-teaching with our Global Scholars specialist for social justice hero research.
Using lessons from Common Sense Media and Google's Be Internet Awesome, we model and teach digital citizenship lessons to all students. Topics include being aware of screen time and how it makes you feel, what to share online, how to recognize cyberbullying and how to be an upstander, creating strong passwords, understanding copyright and plagiarism, and learning how to fact check information posted online.
We point families to Common Sense Media to check out appropriate apps, movies, video games and websites as well as tips on how to talk about technology use with their child.
As instructional leaders in our school, we work to build capacity among our teachers through coaching. We support teachers by building relationships, identifying issues, investigating to find solutions, selecting tools or strategies to address the issue, supporting through implementation by coteaching, modeling, co-planning and supporting, finally, we reflect on the process to recognize their growth.
