From Saigon to Alabama, Inside Out and Back Again is the story of a year in the life of Hà, a ten-year-old girl who flees Vietnam with her mother and brothers, in hopes of escaping the Vietnam War and building new—and safer—lives for themselves in the United States.

Rules is the story of a twelve-year-old girl named Catherine, who is torn between caring for her autistic brother David and finding her own place in life. Catherine's day-to-day life during one summer vacation is usually occupied by caring for David and trying her best to keep him out of trouble.

Out of My Mind is a brilliant novel that takes the reader into the world of an amazing eleven year old girl who eventually realizes she is no different from the kids around her despite her body's disabilities. Melody Brooks was born with cerebral palsy.

A young girl with an adult vocabulary tells the story of a falsely imprisoned and tried African-American. Her father, an attorney, takes on the case to save him - steadfastly ignoring the negative reaction from his southern town folk.

The Diary of a Young Girl, also known as The Diary of Anne Frank, is a journal by Anne Frank, a Jewish teenager who chronicled her family’s two years (1942–44) in hiding during the German occupation of the Netherlands during World War II. The book was first published in 1947—two years after Anne’s death in a concentration camp—and later became a classic of war literature.

Athens City Schools Mask Ordinance 2021-22

Our mask ordinance has changed. We are now operating under a "mask recommended" policy. Masks are recommended inside when proper social distancing cannot be ensured.

Student Choice Books

In addition to the texts students will be reading together as a class, students are also required to read one parent-approved book of his/her choosing each month. Students are required to submit a weekly reading log EVERY THURSDAY. There is a place for submission within the ELA class inside the Schoology portal. If a student completes his/her student choice book before the end of the month, he/she is not required to begin a new one until the beginning of the next month. The student should mark the date the book was completed on the reading log, and continue to submit that same reading log each Thursday until the end of the month. They should begin a new reading log at the beginning of each month. This can be accomplished by simply making a copy of the current reading log, and deleting the information, or going back to the original blank and downloading it again.

We have hardcopy books available in our classroom library, or students may obtain a book from another source. If your child needs help choosing a book, or if you have any questions about this, please contact Mrs. Leake at Jennifer.Leake@acs-k12.org!
