The Thunder Laser Nova 35 is a laser cutter and engraver used to cut and mark designs on many materials. It uses a powerful CO₂ laser beam controlled by a computer to precisely cut shapes or engrave images and text.
Designs are created on a computer and then sent to the machine, which uses the laser to produce the finished piece with high precision.
(Training and supervision are required before using this machine.)
To use the Thunder Laser Nova 35, students must complete the required training and booking steps:
Complete the Online Training Module
Start by watching the online training videos. These explain the basics of the machine, safety rules, and how it works.
Book an In-Person Training Session
After finishing the online module, book a short training session with a Makerspace Coordinator. During this session you will learn how to safely operate the laser cutter.
Book Time to Use the Machine
Once you are approved to use the laser cutter, you can book a time during Advisory or after school to work on your project in the Makerspace.
Training and supervision help ensure that everyone can use the equipment safely and successfully.
The Thunder Laser Nova 35 can be used to create many different projects by cutting or engraving designs into materials. Students often make:
Keychains
Signs and nameplates
Model parts and prototypes
Custom boxes or puzzles
Engraved artwork or decorations
School project components
Finding Files
You don’t have to start from scratch. You can:
Browse our Laser Cutter File Database for ready-to-use designs.
Search online design sites that offer laser-cut files.
Ask a Makerspace Coordinator for recommended resources.
Creating and Preparing Files
Students create and prepare laser designs using LightBurn, the software used with our laser cutter. Lightburn is available on our Makerspace Computer located near the Laser Cutter and on all of our computers in Room 105.
With LightBurn, you can:
Design your own shapes, text, and graphics
Import files such as SVG, AI, or DXF
Set the laser to cut or engrave different parts of your design
Once your design is ready, it can be sent to the Thunder Laser Nova 35 to produce your project.
